Day 3 and 4, 21-22Mar3034 - Cherry Blossoms and Country Boy

Thursday it was sunny but chilly, in the 30's and 40's. Maribeth has some appointments so Bob took June and me downtown to see the Cherry Blossoms.

We are pretty certain we hit "The peak day".  Everything was in peak bloom and there were very few petals on the ground.

We parked in a parking garage near where Bob's office used to be which was pretty close to the Jefferson memorial. We were almost immediately buzzed by two choppers.....welcome to DC.

The views around the tidal pool were amazing. We were glad we visited when we did because next year 150 of the cherry trees around the tidal pool will be removed to do repair work on the seawall.

Pictures of the scenery just don't do it justice.

We stopped and said hi to TJ.

At the Jefferson memorial we were entertained by a group of young singers called the Academy Singers. To be honest we were unsure what language they were singing, but they had harmony.

The Cherry trees were just amazing.

We walked around the tidal pool to the Roosevelt and MLK monuments.

We stopped at the WWII memorial. It opened in 2004 but neither June or I recalled visiting before...hmm.

Yes, that is the Lincoln Memorial in the background.

Every US possession is represented: all 50 states, Guam the Philippines, etc.

We made our way to the reflecting pool in front of the Washington Monument.  We were hungry so started out for the Mall to find some food trucks.

The mall is under construction..like everything...it is a bit of a mess.

I got so hungry I got in line but it wasn't moving

We managed to find the worlds' slowest food truck. They say hunger is the best seasoning....I think in this case it is a good thing. Bob ordered lamb, I ordered pork but we both got some pretty tasty Hamburger...I am pretty sure.

After the food truck we walked the rest of the mall, there was a display for colon cancer awareness, it was impressive. It seems everyone has someone they know today that is afflicted.

We tried to get into the Air and Space museum, but now you have to get a reserved time, we did not want to wait so moved on.

We stopped at the Hirschhorn Museum and got a good coffee and some culture.  Frankly, we did not get much out of Pickett's charge, but it was interesting to see what is called Art.

We used the expressway to get ourselves home, it is expensive but it was rush hour and it was Bob's EZPass.  We got home and took a very short nap before heading out to dinner at La Tolteca in Fairfax. It was an excellent way to end the day.

Friday we left the Malloys' around 08:30.  Google said there were issues due west on 66 so it routed us north to Frederick and then west along the PA border on 68 then 79 to 64.  I am not sure it was smart but that is the route we took, we arrived in Lexington around 18:00.

We went to a Harvest Host for the night. We did not do it intentionally but this is the same HH that we stayed at in 2022; when we arrived it was hopping just like it was 2 years ago.  Country Boy Brewing has good beer, good fun and easy parking.

Saturday we plan to get at least to St. Louis, Mo to see the arch. Everyone says be careful, we will.

  1. Walking the DC mall and seeing the monuments and memorials is patriotic for me, all the cherry blossoms were an added bonus to the trip. Our night at the brewery was fun and relaxing.
